A12 Utrecht Lunetten to Veenendaal Motorway
The project covered the improvement of the A12 motorway in the Netherlands, between junction Lunetten (connection no. 18) and connection no. 23 to the N233 near Veenendaal with the intention of reducing existing congestion, relieving bottlenecks, and providing additional capacity.

The challenge
SPV General Manager Paula van der Veen outlined the background to the A12 motorway project.
„Invesis and its partners BAM Wegen, BAM Civiel, BAM Infratechniek, and BAM Infraconsult were selected by the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management to design, build, finance, and maintain the widening of the 30 km-long section of the A12 motorway between Utrecht-Lunetten and Veenendaal.
„The A12 is one of the Netherland’s most important motorways, stretching from the Hague in the west to the German border in the east; a distance of about 140 km. A large part of the road had already been widened to three or four lanes in each direction with this project widening the remaining 30 km stretch.“

The solution
Construction work began early in 2011 and was completed in August 2012, a relatively short construction period which meant the impact on road users was significantly reduced.
A total reconstruction of the highway was required with the substructure being repositioned, existing viaducts replaced and renewed, and subways and connections made to secondary roads. In addition, all the existing road furniture was renewed and extended, noise reduction measures (e.g. screens) designed and constructed, and traffic management systems upgraded, replaced, and renewed.
