Potsdam Parliament
This project comprised the design, build, financing, maintenance, and operation of Brandenburg’s new parliament building, erected in the heart of the city of Potsdam, Germany, on the foundations of the old city palace at the ‚Old Marketplace‘.
The new 19,000 m2 building is used by members of parliament of the federal state of Brandenburg as well as by the States Audit Office (Landesrechnungshof).

SPV General Manager Ralf Nagengast outlined the background to the Potsdam Parliament project.
„The site of the new Parliament was a highly significant one for the area. The Potsdamer Stadtschloss (Potsdam City Palace) was the winter residence of the Kings of Prussia. Originally built in 1669, it was rebuilt around 1750 by Frederick the Great, transforming it into one of the most important examples of baroque architecture.
„However, in 1945, the Palace was bombed and heavily damaged and the former East German authorities demolished the ruins in the 1960s.
„Part of the challenge for our team was the reconstruction of the historical façade of the building – as well as achieving that, we had to ensure that the new parliament building combined the historical Knobelsdorff design with the requirements of a modern parliament building, i.e. more floor space and large meeting rooms.“

The solution
SPV General Manager Ralf Nagengast continues:
„The team integrated minor elements of the old façade into the new one and also had to ensure that parts of the historic foundations which were visible remained so. That was achieved by installing a small glass floor to allow them to be seen.
„A successful combination of a historic and modern design was achieved. But behind the façade, it really is the sort of state-of-the-art building you would expect to see serving as a Parliament.“
